October Blocks

I think I've mentioned this before, but I am really commited to finishing up my Lucky Stars blocks and I know that if I get behind it will never happen so this block was number 1 on my list when I got my machine back.
October Lucky Stars Block

I am making the 6.5" blocks and this one felt even tinier than the rest because of all of the tiny little pieces, but this is one of my favorite blocks so far.
Lucky Stars BOM Jan - October
I need to use the November and December blocks to balance out the color a little better.  I definitely need some more greens and blues.

October was my month to be quilter for the do. Good Stitches Wish Circle.  Around the time I was picking the block I received some upsetting news that influenced my pick so I would like to share a little bit of personal info about that if that's okay.

I received a text message from my Dad a few weeks ago that a childhood friend of mine had passed away.  I haven't seen her in a long time and I would have probably never seen her again, but she was one of my best friends when I was a kid and our parents were friends so we spent quite a bit of time together.  Late last month she went to a junior high football game to pick up her son from the kid's dad.  They got into an argument about custody and her son's dad shot her.

I cannot get over how incredibly sad the whole situation is.  It is so crazy to me that things like this happen.  Since our circle donates our quilts to Project Linus and this quilt may go to someone who has been in their own difficult family situation, I wanted to make a quilt that was calm and peaceful.  I asked my group to choose blues and grays and browns and blacks that seemed peaceful.
Wish circle blocks - October
It is so inspiring to work with the wonderful women in my circle who are so kind and willing to make blocks every month.  I am looking forward to finishing this one up so I can get it donated and it can go to someone who needs it.

  2. This is a great block. Love the colors.

I'm so sorry to read about your childhood friend's death - how tragic! The cool colors on the charity quilt will be sure to be well-received by whomever is struggling through their own hard times. So kind of you to do it.

  5. I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. That's absolutely tragic. Hopefully working on the do. Good Stitches project helps you work through some of the emotions.

Your Lucky Stars are gorgeous. Watching everyone put those together is slowly opening my eyes to paper piecing.

  7. It is tragic that things like that happen. I think it's good that you found a way to share it here though. There's something about being in touch with other's pain that brings people together and begins the healing process for us all. And your blocks are a fitting response.

  12. What a terrible thing, and such a stark reminder of how unpredictable life really is. It's heartwarming to see you using this as an opportunity to bring some light to another's life even though your own has extinguished a bit in the process.

  13. Thanks for sharing your story. I hope it helps to share it. We think these things always happen to someone else. On July 30, the police chaplain knocked on my door to tell me my husband had been found dead in his apartment. Well, actually it was my ex-husband of only 7 months. We had divorced on as friendly a terms as possible. I had talked to him about 2.5 weeks before and he told me that he still loved me. He was so decomposed that he had to be id'd by dental records. His family lives in another state and have done the bare minimum and have taken their time in doing that. I am having a memorial for him this weekend. I knew he was somewhat estranged from them and had no idea the estrangement was to this extent. My prayers go out to you that you have healing and this experience will help you in the future to assist others. Blessings to you for all you do with your quilting.

  15. Just read this after being linked to it from a more recent post. The girl who was shot was the cousin of one of our friends. Such a sad story.
